What is a gas ball valve?
A gas ball valve is a quarter-turn ball valve listed for fuel gas — natural gas and propane — rather than water. It is the shutoff on the branch to each gas appliance: open with the lever in line with the pipe, closed across it.
Fuel gas codes call for a shutoff for each appliance, in the same room and close to it (within 6 feet under the International Fuel Gas Code), ahead of the appliance connector. Valves with a flare outlet take the connector directly; a stainless appliance connector with the ball valve already on it does the same job in one part. Use a valve whose body carries a gas listing, and leak-test every joint before you leave.

Common questions
Can I use a water ball valve on a gas line?
No. Use a valve listed for fuel gas; the listing is marked on the valve body. Water valves are not tested or listed for natural gas or propane service.
Where does the gas shutoff valve go for an appliance?
In the same room as the appliance and close to it — within 6 feet under the International Fuel Gas Code — upstream of the appliance connector, where it can be reached. Check the code adopted where you work for local amendments.
Is the custom sleeve really free?
Yes. Plate design, plate making, and sleeve printing are free, forever, with any lever-handle ball valve ordered through The Plumber's Choice or Standard Plumbing Supply. Our graphic artists help at no charge, and your approved design is reused on every future order.
Will a custom sleeve fit this valve?
Custom sleeves slide over the lever handle of a ball valve. Three plate sizes are made from the same approved design so it fits different handle sizes, and your design prints in any of our print colors on any of our sleeve colors.
Do I need an order before I start designing?
No. You can open the designer and start without an account. A valid custom-sleeve valve order must exist before our artists begin the plate, and anything you make beforehand carries over once the order is confirmed. Plates are made within 2 business days of final draft approval.
